Oh, God. I probably shouldn’t be writing this right now. My emotions are on overdrive.
The state I love is on fire. I was born here and have lived here all my life. And all I can do tonight is cry. Landmarks I’ve known for decades are gone.
We’ve never had it this crazy before. We’ve hardly ever even had a structure lost in a fire. This time is different. Homes are being reduced to ashes and lives are being torn apart then dumped into those ashes.
Half of the nation’s fire resources have been directed to Colorado and those valiant and brave men and women have earned our respect… our awe… our debt.
We can examine the science of fire mitigation until our brains fall out, but right now—tonight—lives have been disrupted and potentially changed forever. More than thirty-two thousand families have been evacuated from Colorado Springs. More than two hundred and fifty homes have been lost near Fort Collins. Twenty-two homes were lost in Estes Park. My favorite B&B in the state, near Mesa Verde, is in a questionable safe zone. Boulder is currently being threatened.
It’s bad.
But wait.
Here’s where I hope everyone who has been impacted can find your heart: not as a victim. Not as someone who has lost everything. Because you haven’t. IT IS WHAT IT IS. My heart aches for you, but the truth is we are a community of men and women who know how to rise above our circumstances. Who know how to reach out to others and help them heal.
We know that as long as we can pull in a breath we’re meant for more. Instead of being a victim, be a role model. Be someone who can inspire and fill others with hope and direction.
Fight the fight. Share the memories. Carve the future.
